Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz…

When I was going through the ordination process – some 15 years ago now – I remember one piece of practical advice a mentor gave me before I was interviewed by the diocesan Commission on Ministry: “They are going to ask about your prayer life. Make sure you have a good answer.”

Fifteen years later, I’m not sure if I yet have a good answer! You see, I very much enjoy getting things done. And, I also enjoy taking time to reflect on big ideas. I tell myself that Jesus also seemed to like to get things done (healings, exorcisms, miracles) and he liked to reflect on big ideas (parables, sermons, debates).

Praying, though, seems like a third thing. It is not about getting anything done, nor is it about just having a good think. What is it? What’s the point of it? Why, when Jesus wasn’t getting things done and thinking big thoughts, did he pray so much — and tell his followers to do the same? And why do people like me struggle to articulate an answer? Let’s dig in this Sunday.
