Better Neighbors Project

Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t we rent out one of the houses?

No, not without losing our property tax exemption. Also, being a landlord would require a huge commitment of staff time and lay leadership oversight. That would drain resources and energy from our core purpose and ministries.

How is the Rectory (larger house) being used now?

Kathryn Kinjo, our Director of Music & Engagement, is living in the Rectory as part of her compensation. She has agreed to move into the Marian House.

What will happen to the Labyrinth?

If we continue having a Labyrinth, we will build a new, smaller, more accessible, more maintainable one in the empty lot north of the Marian House. The Park District has expressed some interest in retaining the Labyrinth if they buy the land, but we cannot hold them to that.

What if we need the Rectory in the future?

We can use some of the sale proceeds to fund an escrow account to support housing for a future rector. We also will still have one house!

Why are we giving the Park District first refusal?

In our feedback process with the congregation, most individuals who had a preference preferred we sell to the Park District. They liked the idea of selling to a nonprofit entity with a mission and purpose parallel to ours and the opportunity to increase our partnership with the PD as a neighbor. That being said, we are still obliged to sell at market rate, even to the Park District.
