Thursday Evening Bible Study
Thursday, April 8, 2021, 7:00 PM
Thursday evenings, at 7 pm, St. Gregory's Bible Study group continues our Zoom-connected study of John’s Gospel Chapter 1:19-51, with attention to this Gospel’s introduction of John the Baptist and the calling of the disciples in comparison to the other Gospels. We will be discussing the following questions:
1. Scripture had not spoken of a prophet who would come and plunge people into water. What was the intention of John’s baptism? For what was his baptism meant to prepare the people? In what ways are we today in need of that same preparation?
2. In John’s Gospel, some of his disciples begin to follow Jesus. Why do you suppose they left John to follow Jesus? One of those disciples is identified as Andrew but one is unnamed. Who might that unnamed disciple be?
3. What does Nathanael's judgments (Chapter 1:46) say about what we should or should not do in our everyday lives?
4. What does it mean that Jesus has made heaven and earth open to each other?
For this Gospel, we are utilizing two resources to guide discussion and raise key points of the passages:
“Conversations with Scripture: The Gospel of John” by Cynthia Kittredge and “The Concise Commentary on the Gospel and Epistles of John” by Raymond Brown. Both resources are available from Amazon in paperback and Kindle formats and are recommended but not required reading to participate in our weekly study.
This would be a great opportunity to engage in a special Bible study as part of your Lenten discipline. So plan to reserve an hour every Thursday and hope you can join us. If you have any question, please contact Scott Hamilton ([email protected]) or Meredith Potter ([email protected]).
