.
July 7:: Waste Management Recycling Tour, 4-8 pm. We will do dinner after our tour, place TBD, but probably in Gurnee.

July 14:: North Shore Unitarian Church Rummage Sale Helping,5:30 -8:30 pm. 100% of the proceeds of the sale got to various charities. Where else can we go to find awesome Halloween costumes and volunteer at the same time? Dinner will be served at the Unitarian Church.
July 21:: Kelley & Spaulding Funeral Home Visit. 6-8 pm. I know this sounds weird, but I think it is really important to talk about what happens when we die. Unlike a few generations ago, many students have never been to a funeral or seen a casket, and the first time they have that experience is when someone very close to them dies. How does working in a funeral home challenge your faith? What does a casket look like? How did you end up in this line of work? What do you say when someone dies? Is it scary?
July 28:: Paint Your Own Pottery. Painting premade pottery & figurines. 6-8 pm.
.
August 4:: NO SYG due to HS Adventure Trip.
August 11:: Whole Foods Cooking Class. 6-8:30 pm..
Summer Youth Group, SYG ::the summer.
Wednesdays during summer SYG is a special time in our youth ministry year. SYG involves lots of hang out time for discussions, seeing and do new things, and generally broadening our horizons. This year, I have off campus activities planned that will be sure to expand our understandings and challenge us just the same. I hope you will join us every Wednesday that you are able! Because SYG involves lots of driving and advanced planning, I must know by Monday at 5pm if you are joining us for that Wednesday’s activities so I can plan for adequate drivers, confirm final numbers with our activity and arrange for any last minute problems or food.
Every week will be different and will have different meeting times. This will require communication! I’ll send out email updates every Monday confirming details, but this calendar should serve as your basic schedule. I know that some of the afternoon meeting times may be problematic for kids that don’t drive and parents that need to be at work. Please let me know if you need help with transportation.
There is no cost for any of our activities. That is why we sell pumpkins and cook pancakes
For all events, drop off & pick up is at St. Gregory’s.

Regular Youth Groups in November:
8th, 15th, & 22rd. No Youth Group Thanksgiving Weekend, November 29th. Regular Youth Group Meetings are the backbone of the Youth Ministry. It is our chance to check in with one another, to learn together about our faith, and relax for a bit before the school week begins. It
is difficult to become and remain a part of the community if you aren’t there. If you aren’t coming regularly, you are definitely missing out!
We Could use some snacks for our Regular Youth Group Meetings. It is a sad state when all we have to eat are wasabi peas and popcorn. Please help us broaden our snack selection by bringing a snack to share. If it is homemade, an ingredient list is appreciated by ours students
that have allergies.
Hangout / Game Night @ Marian House
On November 20 from 7-10pm, come to Marian house to enjoy a fire, play some fun board & card games, eat snacks, and share some laughter. Easy, Free and Fun! Come for the whole evening or just a part of it. We’ll also roast marshmallows and chat by the firepit outside.
December’s Joint Youth Group:
The Night Ministry -> www.thenightministry.org
For our December Service Project, we will be visiting The Night Ministry in Chicago. The Night Ministry directly serves the 10,000 homeless teens in Chicago. They also have a shelter for homeless pregnant and parenting teens. Our missions board has supported The Night Ministry, and we will be bringing items and cookies to donate. At this visit, we will not be able to do much hands-on work, but we will be learning about teen homelessness in Chicago. After this initial visit, we will have the opportunity to partner with The Night Ministry for an ongoing service relationship.
The Night Ministry is currently needing the following items:
Travel sized toiletries: toothpaste & toothbrush, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, disposable razor, mouthwash, washcloth, lip balm, shaving cream
Baby items: baby lotion, baby bath, baby powder, 8 oz baby bottles, petroleum jelly, bottle brush, pacifies, rattles, sleeper/onesies, bib, books, blanket, baby towels, booties and hat set, diapers (size newborn or 1). The Pumpkins are coming October 11th!!
Everyone is needed to help unload the pumpkins. The semi is expected to arrive around 4 pm. We need every available set of hands, and several wheel barrows and wagons. We are ordering 10% more than last year. That means we will unload about 1,800 bulk pumpkins (the big ones) and hundreds of mini pumpkins and gourds. The pumpkins sales enables to do all the exciting things we do in the youth ministry.
Pumpkin selling begins October 11 until
October 31st
Every family is expected to sign up for at least two
shifts. The pumpkin patch requires about 150 shifts, totaling 350 volunteer hours. This means everyone needs to help. It is because we have two successful fundraisers that we don’t need to do any additional fundraising or have activity fees. The Pumpkin Patch in the fall and the Pancake Brunch and Rent-a-Priest in the Spring funds all of our general, year-round activities, food, and supplies, and
they greatly underwrite the cost of the summer trips. The Patch is open Monday-Friday from 12-7pm; Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 7pm. Please find a time that is convenient for your family. If needed, we will start calling families
that have not sign up on October 12th to help fill shifts.
Pumpkin Carving Party/Intergenerational Event
We will be hosting this Fall’s Intergenerational Event:
Pumpkin Carving! on October 25 at 10:15 am. During the regular education hour after the 9 am service. There is no Sunday School this day, as everyone is invited to carve, paint, or decorate a pumpkin.
Youth Office Hours & Contact Info
Erica is in the office every Monday-Thursday morning,
unless I have a meeting off campus. I’m also available Monday and Wednesday afternoons. If you miss me at church, you can call me at home. Fridays and Saturdays are my days to be at home with my kids. I use my cell phone for emergencies and not for general communication.
If needed, you can call my cell phone, but it is likely you will get voicemail. All of my contact information is listed on every newsletter at the bottom.

New Newsletter!!!
So…. What do you think? Bill Foltz and I worked on getting this together. I thought our old newsletter was getting a little stale, so I decided to shake things up a bit. Let me know what you think. Your newsletter will arrive monthly in your mail box. If you have siblings in youth group, you will each get a newsletter. However, I will try to save a stamp and mail them inside each other. Please be kind and give your brother or sister their copy.
Other happenings on September 13th
Not only is September 13th the first Sunday of Youth Group, it is
also the Youth Mission Trip presentation. The 16 students that traveled to Delbarton, WV and their adults will be presenting a picture show and sharing their stories of service. This is always a highlight at St. Gregory’s, and I hope everyone will attend. Also, Church School begins on September 13th, and there is the Annual Blessing of the Backpacks.
Calling all students….
St. Gregory’s All Youth Fall Retreat
We will be going on our first ever all-youth retreat on Saturday, September 26th to Sunday the 27th. Everyone is invited and HIGHLY encourage to attend. This will be a great way to kick off the year, integrate our new students, and grow together. I promise it will be a highlight of our year. We will be staying in Joliet, in a huge old farmhouse on 12 acres. I’ve planned time for new and exciting worship and prayer, discussion, organized fun and hanging out time. Please, please, PLEASE let me know by the 20th if you will be joining us. Note this is Yom Kippur weekend and many of you have Monday off, making this a perfect weekend to get away without sacrificing homework time.
The Pumpkins Are Coming!
The pumpkins will be arriving on Sunday, October 11th. The pumpkins are scheduled for 4 pm, but we know from previous years’ experience that is a loose estimate. Unloading pumpkins will be our youth group activity for Oct. 11th. Please mark your calendars and plan on coming. Once again, we are ordering a record number of
pumpkins, and we need every available set of hands to help. The Pumpkin Patch and the Pancake Brunch & Rent-a-Priest are our sole fundraisers for the youth ministry. If you are new to the Youth Group, or if you just need the basics, I will be presenting “A Pumpkin Patch Primer” at the adult forum on October 4th at 10am.
