Dearly Beloved,
NEWS FROM DEACON DONNÉ AND OUR COMPANION PARISH
Deacon Donné is now Father Donné! He was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests this past Sunday at the Cathedral of St. Lawrence in Antananarivo, Madagascar. I asked Bishop Todd McGregor to provide Donné with two ordination gifts, one on behalf of St. Gregory's, and one personally from me and Ingrid. For a total of $60, Donné was able to purchase a cope, a red chasuble, and a clergy shirt!
Here is Rev. Donné with Bishop Todd.
And here the new priest poses with his wife, Vero, and their son, Andrianiaina.
And here the new priest gives his first Communion during the service in the Cathedral.
A word about his title: in Madagascar, most ordained clergy simply go by the title Reverend rather than Father (or, in a very few places, Mother).
ST. GREGORY'S EPISCOPAL PRESCHOOL NEWS FROM BOARD MEMBER CATHERINE MARTIN
Ida Butler has been hard at work this summer as our Preschool's development director, planning and implementing a marketing program. With input from the preschool director, Debbie Ham-Bolger, Ida created and produced a plethora of Preschool promotional pieces!
We are advertising our Preschool with key rings and magnets, and with fliers which include a discount coupon. The key rings and fliers were handed out at Deerfield's 4th of July Parade and will also be featured at St. Gregory's Farmer's Market Day on Saturday, August 7th. We will soon have a new tri-fold brochure to hand out, detailing our Preschool curriculum, philosophy, tuition and program options.
And if you haven't picked up your own preschool vehicle magnet to display on your car and advertise our Preschool as you drive, please pick one (or more) up in the church office. They are great to give to your neighbors and friends with small children or grandchildren who would benefit from 2, 3, 4 or 5 days a week of Preschool or Kindergarten Enrichment. All families who arrange a visit to the preschool will receive one, along with a St. Gregory's Preschool giraffe growth chart, another clever reminder to "Come Grow With Us!" at the school.
In addition, you will soon see a new preschool banner on display in the front lawn to highlight our Preschool's new 5-day option, especially for families of kindergartners in Deerfield, where the kindergarten day is less than four hours.
Please join Ida and the rest of our Preschool Board by playing a part in promoting our Preschool! Come to the office for promotional items and literature and let's all help the Preschool realize its best year ever!
AND SPEAKING OF ST. GREGORY'S FARMERS MARKET ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 7
Thanks to Karen Dahl for organizing St. Gregory's Day at the Market. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our parish. We need people for the hourly slots― so please sign up for the 7-8 am hour with Alison Cioffi-Brown; or 8-9 am with Barbara Schaper; or 9-10 am with Sue Koy; or 10-11 am with Michele Appelbaum; or 11-Noon with Ida Butler. I am so grateful to those who have already agreed to represent us. To join them, call the Parish Office or sign up this Sunday on the table across the hall.
Perhaps you can't be there in person but would like to be there in baked goods! Please drop them off at St. Gregory's Kitchen on Friday, August 6, by 8:00 pm, or first thing Saturday morning at the Farmers Market. And once again thanks to Alison Cioffi-Brown and Michele Appelbaum who have also signed up for the Bake Sale!

Dearly Beloved,
MASS ON THE GRASS
It was great fun to celebrate my return from vacation on the first of two Masses on the Grass for this summer.
As I surveyed the wondrous congregation (did you catch the allusion?!), arranged in a semi-circle around the gazebo, I couldn't help mentioning in my opening welcome how good it will be when our Master Plan for worship will give us the flexibility to offer an "in-the-round" alternative for celebrating and preaching.
It takes a great deal of extra effort to put on a Mass on the Grass, and to offer the delightful buffet afterward.
Meredith, to whom I am so grateful as the tour de force behind these mid-summer experiences, offers her. . .
"THANKS to all who helped make our Mass on the Grass so much fun. Special thanks to the Schaper family: David, Barbara, Matthew and Scott for all their work in helping to buy food, carry supplies to the pavilion site, cook, and cleaning up. Thanks to Lyle and Sybil Ten Eyck for carrying supplies to the pavilion and setting up for the Eucharist. Thanks to our pick up band: Jim Swager on drums, Jim Collins on keyboard, Rob Cunningham, Meredith Potter and Bill Roberts on guitar, and Erika Hernandez for singing with the chancel choir for the anthem, "Go Make a Difference." And it was so exciting to see Rob's fellow vocalists join us: Dena Borman, Susan Nelson, and Hans Royal-Hedinger. Thanks also to all who brought such delicious food. Thanks to all who helped with the clean up, especially Dorthea White, Nuala Kurokawa and the Schapers.
PRESCHOOL APPRECIATION
On Saturday, July 10, David Schaper, Preschool Director Debbie Ham-Bolger, Ida Butler, Jon and Susie Dutcher, Kimberly Balmos, Marty Esgar, Mike Hill, and Sybil and Lyle Ten Eyck painted the preschool classrooms. I was so impressed by the work that they, and the "preparation crew" in June, had done: the Preschool/Christian Education Wing hasn't looked so clean and bright, from windows to walls, for years. Plans are in the works to clean the carpets, too.
At last night's Preschool Board meeting, I was further impressed by the work Ida has done in marketing. For those of you reading this online, you can read her updated report to last week's Vestry meeting here.
NEWS FROM DEACON DONNÉ AND OUR COMPANION PARISH
Hello Rev. William,
I greet you in Jesus' name. We are doing fine here and we thank God for his never failing kindness.
Thanks for the letter you sent to our Sunday School children, we are getting set to respond soonest.
The construction of our church is going on well. The wall is already up and we are currently working on the roof. Glory be to God!
I would also like to inform you that I will be ordained as a priest on 25th July this year at the St. Lawrence Cathedral in the capital, Antananarivo. I request that you keep me in prayer as I undertake this noble task.
We continue to pray for you, your family and the parish where you serve.
I am looking forward to when you will be coming to see us again.
God bless you,
Rev. Donné & family and Fort Dauphin Parish.
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MARIAN PARKER
The Memorial Service for Marian Parker, widow of our founding rector, will be held this Saturday, July 24, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, at the corner of McHenry Avenue and Grove Street in Crystal Lake. Interment will be in our Churchyard on this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. I hope that some of you may be able to attend the memorial service, as well as Sunday's interment.
Faithfully yours,
MARIAN HOUSE UPDATE
- Received final clearance from hygienist approving remediation contractor's work with appropriate tests meeting performance and results protocols established by industry;
- Scaled back plans for 2nd floor (as recommended by the Work Group and approved by Vestry at July's meeting) to rebuild only the previously finished areas. Adding attic dormer has been scrapped due to several structural concerns identified that indicate substantial cost overruns as well as known additional costs did not seem to justify livable space gained;
- Agreed attic space will become conditioned (HVAC), and finished with drywall with overhead lighting controlled by wall switch;
- Awarded HVAC and bathroom contracts;
- Continued demolition to remove old framing not applicable to drawings, and any unused/obsolete HVAC ductwork, plumbing and electrical in preparation for actual rebuilding.

VICAR’S CORNER
A new book on worship came across my desk this past week. It is written by well-known pastor and author N. Graham Standish and is titled In God’s Presence: Encountering, Experiencing, and Embracing the Holy in Worship. The author challenges the reader to think about why we do what we do in worship. He asks, “Do we worship the way we do because it is how we have always done it? Do we worship the way we do because it is what we are best at? Do we worship the way we do because it makes certain members of the church happy?” Standish then suggests that our reasons for worshiping the way we do may be at the center of why so many people continue to walk away from the church. But he also states his conviction that people want a tangible encounter with God. I would suggest that the way we worship at St. Gregory’s does invite people to experience the living Christ, and that is precisely why we do what we do at St. Gregory’s. Furthermore, the way we worship is also why St. Gregory’s has something to offer those who have walked away from other churches!!
MASS ON THE GRASS AND CHURCH PICNIC - JULY 18 AT 9:00 AM
Mass on the Grass at the north end of Mitchell Park. Church service at 9:00 a.m. followed by the picnic lunch. Park in our parking lot and walk north past the labyrinth or take Hazel Avenue and park in the swimming pool parking lot. Church will furnish hamburgers, hot dogs, and some soft drinks and lemonade. Please bring a dish to share. There will be benches to sit on, or bring a lawn chair. Helpers needed to set up for lunch – tables need to be set and grills brought to the picnic site. David Schaper will also need help with the grilling. Services at 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. will be held in the Church. Eleven o’clockers who wish to attend the picnic, are encouraged to send their dish to share to the picnic site before the service, then join the picnic after the service.
PRESCHOOL NEWS
At its June Meeting, the Vestry approved a request from the Preschool Board to expand St. Gregory’s Episcopal Preschool hours to five days per week. This is welcomed news for parents who are seeking a 5-day option for their preschooler or kindergartner! For the 2010-2011 school year, students may enroll for either 2, 3, 4 or 5 days – morning or afternoon options for all.
“We are particularly excited to offer the Kindergarten Enrichment program on this basis” notes Director Debbie Ham-Bolger. “We currently escort kindergarten students from Wilmot for enrichment classes and, of course, we welcome students from other elementary schools via the District 109 bus system, which parents may elect to pay for. Expanding to a 5-day option will, we feel, increase the appeal of St. Gregory’s Preschool dramatically.”
Ida Butler is working this summer as a consultant to the preschool developing marketing and promotional materials. A newly–published flier is available on the hallway table to give to your family members, friends and neighbors. Why don’t you contribute to our promotion by handing a flier – which includes a discount coupon! – to at least TWO families near you? (The coupon encourages registration before August 1st, by cutting the registration fee in half.) Many hands make light work, and this truly is an exceptional program worthy of our individual efforts.
Look for more Preschool News in upcoming newsletters.
HARD HAT AREA
As of this week, Marian House has become a construction zone. To ensure the safety of parishioners and to minimize the church’s liability, the premises of Marian House, 835 N. Wilmot Road, will be off-limits until the remediation and remodeling have been completed. Anyone needing to enter the premises should contact Dorthea White, project coordinator, to arrange a supervised entry to the premises.
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR MARIAN PARKER
The Memorial Service for Marian Parker, widow of the founding rector of St. Gregory’s Church, will be held on Saturday, July 24, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, at the corner of McHenry Avenue and Grove Street in Crystal Lake. Interment will be in the St. Gregory’s Churchyard on Sunday, July 25, at 12:30 p.m. Members of St. Gregory’s are invited to attend both the memorial service and the interment.
FORMER ASSOCIATE RECEIVES CALL TO CALIFORNIA PARISH
The Rev. Jeanette Repp, one time associate at St. Gregory’s Church, has been called as rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in San Pedro, California. St. Peter’s is a 125 year old, medium sized, progressive, culturally diverse parish. The church describes itself as having a strong sense of community/family and sought a leader “who would embrace their diversity, empower their laity, and help grow and support the youth program.” Mother Jeanette is excited about this pastoral opportunity. She and her twin daughters will be leaving for San Pedro at the end of July. Congratulations and God speed to her!
AUCTION COMMITTEE NEWS
The 2010 Preschool Auction will be held on Saturday, September 25th, so mark your calendars for this exciting event! A popular aspect of prior auctions has been a cash raffle, which will be repeated this year. Beginning this Sunday, July 18, and up to the Auction, tickets for the raffle will be available following Sunday services and on weekdays during Parish Office hours. Raffle tickets will be $5 each or 5 for $20. The more we sell, the more you can win!
Last year, the themed gift baskets were a big hit at the Silent Auction. We are again asking that families or groups from the parish sponsor a basket in 2010. You can create your own theme or use an idea from 2009, when the gift baskets included Reader's Delight, Proud to be an American, Barbecue Basics, Tea Time, Spa at Home, and Movie Night, to name just a few. A sign-up sheet for baskets is outside the sanctuary.
We would also gratefully accept donations of bottles of wine for the wine pull, which was a very popular new addition to the Auction last year. Please leave any wine donations in Fr. Bill's office, where they will remain safe and secure!
Donation forms acknowledging your tax-deductible donation will be available in Ida's office or on the hallway table. Thank you in advance for your always generous support of the Preschool Auction. The Auction Committee
UPCOMING SUMMER YOUTH GROUP EVENTS
Wednesday July 21 Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home Visit 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home - I know this sounds weird, but I think it is really important to talk about what happens when we die. Unlike a few generations ago, many students have never been to a funeral, or seen a casket, and the first time they have that experience is when someone very close to them dies. Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home does several services with St. Gregory's and has a good relationship with our church. I've asked Kelley & Spalding if they would lead us on a tour of their facility, and speak about what they do. How does working in a funeral home challenge your faith? What does a casket look like? How did you end up in this line of work? Is it like a CSI show? Is it scary? Father Bill and Mother Meredith will join us for this tour.
Wednesday July 28 Paint Your Own Pottery 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
ST. GREGORY’S BOOK CLUB NEWS
The next book club meeting will be Wednesday, July 21st at 7:30 p.m. Our selection is Hannah’s List by Debbie Macomber. It is a lighter summer read.
On the anniversary of his beloved wife's death, Dr. Michael Everett receives a letter his wife Hannah had written him. In the letter she makes one final request that he should marry again. She has also chosen three women for him to consider. During the months that follow, he spends time getting to know the three women, learning more about each of them, about himself, and about what Hannah already knew…he's a man who needs the completeness only love can offer. Hannah's List leads him to the woman who can help him find it!

VICAR’S CORNER
The Episcopal Church in general, and St. Gregory’s in particular, are being challenged as never before in history to focus our time, our money, and our energies on the “mission of the church.” In a recent address to the USPG-Anglicans in World Mission conference, our presiding bishop, The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, defined the church’s mission as “healing and restoring all creation toward the common weal of God . . . living in justice with dignity, and all people and creation living together in peace.” She went on to say that “God’s mission needs our willingness to partner with any who share that vision of a healed world. . . If we understand our beautiful vocation to be building a just and peaceful society, we’ll also understand the need to be able to work with others who share that goal, whatever their religious affiliation or politics.” Her words serve as both challenge and reminder for people of all faiths to set aside differences and work together to bring justice and peace to our world!

YOUTH MINISTER’S CORNER
Summer youth ministry is an exciting and challenging time. It is exciting because we have the potential for more relaxed time together, as students are no longer occupied with school work. But, it is also challenging because our attendance can vary so wildly as students take vacations and attend summer camps. So, I have resolved to let the summer months be a time of relationship and friendship building by engaging in activities we don't have opportunity to do during the school year.
Last week, 18 of us attended a group dinner at Noodles & Co. in Lincolnshire. We brought along a few games to keep us occupied. On the surface, this activity was just about food and fun. But, if you were the proverbial fly-on-the-wall, you would have heard deep conversations among the students and adults about friend problems, relationships, issues with parents, and dying grandparents. This week, we are going rock climbing, with 2/3 of our time being spent in group building activities.
The time spent in casual conversation during the summer months builds legitimacy to the teaching and organized discussions we engage in during the school year. Both are important, and in many ways interdependent. By having less programmed time to listen to the kids, the youth ministry team and I learn what is really going on in their hearts, providing insight into lesson planning for next year. By allowing the students to deepen their "church friend" friendships, we are providing a space for young Christians to support one another and have a community of friends outside of school. Equally important are times of organized instruction, and this discipleship happens during our school year youth group meetings.
Our students are blessed this summer to have a wonderful team of adults, our Summer Youth Group Leaders. Joining me are: Judy McCann (her 5th summer), Sarah Snyder (her 4th), and new this year is Leigh Stewart. My hope is that our time together during the summer months deepens our ministry, and refreshes us for the fall.
FOURTH OF JULY PARADE
The Deerfield Family Days 2010 Spectacular Parade will begin at 12:00 noon on Sunday, July 4th. The Parade Route is Deerspring Pool to Waukegan Road, Waukegan Road to Hazel Avenue, Ending at Jewett Park. This year, we will carry the St. Gregory’s Episcopal Preschool banner to promote our program and announce that preschool will be OPEN 5 DAYS beginning Fall 2010. If you would like to march alongside the car and handout candy and informational flyers, please call Ida at the Parish Office.
PRESCHOOL PAINTING
Painting will happen in the preschool room on Saturday, July 10th beginning at 9:00 a.m. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me or Ida know if you can attend and if you have tarps, paint trays and rollers so I can have enough supplies available. Thanks and I'm looking forward to a fun morning. Deb Bolger.

CHURCH SCHOOL DIRECTOR’S CORNER
Shari Benson will be starting an Atrium III training program this summer, thanks to a generous anonymous donation to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program for our parish. In addition to the gift for her training, Shari has also received a scholarship which frees up money to enable others also to receive Catechesis training. All Catechesis training programs take place over two years and greatly enrich the expertise of our teachers as well as leading to certification of our atrium teachers. If you feel called to this ministry to our children and would like more information about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd training, please be in touch with Shari Benson, Sharon Henley-Gramer, or Paula Hamilton who are all trained catechists, or speak to Gretchen Bayer, Director of our Church School.
Do you feel called to help in the church school, but are not ready to teach? Our parish saved about $2,500.00 last year by using adult volunteers for our nursery aged children during the 9:00 a.m. service throughout the school year. Adult helpers assist Jaine Spellman and her paid staff in the nursery and Mother Meredith in the Children’s Church. If you feel called to this important ministry of being a volunteer in our nursery or Children’s Church, please contact the church school director or Jaine Spellman. Beginning this fall, we will have a new online schedule so that volunteers can sign up easily on the Internet. This is the same scheduling program currently being used for sign-ups of lay ministers and acolytes.
LETTERS FROM OUR TROOPS
Dear Friends at St. Gregory’s,
Thank you for packing and sending the care packages. That meant a lot to myself and the men I work with (I shared the treats of course!). Things are going well here in Iraq in most areas and most people would be surprised to hear how much the Iraqis have taken charge of their own security. The last eight years of deployments to Iraq have been a difficult thing for some to endure but I think in the end people will see that a lot of good came out of it. I wish you all a happy summer in the Greatest State in the Union!
We will be leaving soon to go back to the states, but you can send any further packages to other needy soldiers. Thanks! God Bless.
Sincerely,
Josh Anderson
To All Members of St. Gregory’s Church,
I want to personally thank you for the care package. The package was given out to several of my soldiers. It is comforting to KNOW there are people out there that take time out of their schedules to support the troops that are continuously put in harm’s way. Again, from the 401st MP Company, thank you.
Sincerely,
1SG Davis, John
Dear St. Gregory’s Church,
Thank you so much for all the care packages. They have been disbursed through my unit here. We really appreciate all your love, support, and prayers.
God Bless!
MSgt Beatie and all at 11APF/MCT
BOUQUETS

Ø Removed fixtures from 2nd floor bathroom in preparation for remediation contractor’s work and reduced our costs.
TRAFFIC ALERT
The Deerfield Road entrance to the church parking lot will remain barricaded while the park district is having summer camp during the week and Mitchell Park is being used for baseball games on the weekend. This is to stop through traffic and help ensure the safety of children walking from our building or the parking lot to the park. It will also help us direct traffic as needed on Sundays.
WARNING
It has been reported that a wallet was stolen from a car parked in our lot. Please make sure your car doors are locked and that wallets and cell phones are not left in a visible location.

VICAR’S CORNER
The early Church struggled as it attempted to include Jews and Gentiles into the believing communities; as it tried to decide hierarchy and Church governance; as it sought to interpret Jesus’ teachings into their own call to faithfulness and mission. But within those struggles, the Church came to an understanding very early about what it meant to be a Christian community: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teachings and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” [Acts 2:42] These words which describe the earliest of the Christian communities, also describe the essence of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church. Most Christian denominations stress one or more of the above practices. For example, there are churches in which the Bible and its interpretation are stressed. The Catholic Church emphasizes the “breaking of bread.” But I contend that the Episcopal Church is the one branch and expression of Christianity in which each of these practices are balanced in our Christian understanding and integral to our faith. The Apostles’ Teachings are practiced not only as we read and study the Bible in worship, study groups, and sermons, but also as we learn and reflect on the teachings of the missionaries and saints who have gone before us. Our church gathers for food and fellowship after worship and at picnics and potluck suppers. We also have gatherings of fellowship groups, such as the Grovers and the Brookies. The breaking of the bread, which we call the Holy Eucharist, is central to our Sunday and Wednesday worship services. And our prayers for the world, the nation, our community, and individuals are at the heart of each worship service. Our prayers for each other are practiced individually and through our prayer chain and prayer blanket ministries. I return to these practices of the early Church again and again as I seek to live a Christian life and to lead this Christian community in this time and in this place. I commend them to your practice as well, especially since I believe they are at the very heart of what it means to be an Episcopalian!!!
FLOWER PLANTING AT THE ZINT HOME
On June 6th, several students and adults took on some gardening projects at the Zint's home. Dorthea White served as our master gardener, and was accompanied by Nuala Kurokawa, Bill and Janet Foltz, Meredith Potter, Erica Jeglum, Emma Martin, Jocelyn York, and Ashley and Hannah Benson. In addition to meals, Susan identified gardening as something the congregation could do to help the family as they take care of their son, Andrew, who has brain cancer. We planted, transplanted, and planted some more!
If you are interested in helping with a possible Fall gardening project, please contact Erica Jeglum or Dorthea White.

THANKS TO Mary Keller and Dorthea White for the lovely pots of flowers adorning our church and kitchen doors!

VICAR’S CORNER
When my children were growing up, summer always signaled a change of pace for the family. As a teacher, I took the summers off, refusing to be enticed by the extra income teaching summer school would represent. Although my boys were active in music and sports, I tried hard for them to be able to take a break from their busy school year schedules as well. And so summer was a time for us to be together - to camp, to picnic, and to visit relatives.
There were two specific activities we kept up during the summer: we ate dinner together every evening, regardless of whether it was at home, at the lake, or around a campfire; and we went to church together on Sunday mornings. Those two activities of eating together and worshiping together punctuated our summers.
Summer at St. Gregory’s has begun. Church School is suspended for the summer and other activities will also be taking a break. Our Rector will begin his vacation and the Parish Office will have summer hours. I hope as each of you plan your own summer “break” time, you will make a conscious effort to make it a family time. And so I suggest you too might decide as families to eat together each evening and to worship together each Sunday morning.
A blessed summer to you all!

Dearly Beloved,
NEWS FROM DEACON DONNÉ AND OUR COMPANION PARISH
Dear Rev William and all Christians of St Gregory Church.
The peace of Jesus on you!
I apologize for not writing for you for a long moment. So I give you now some news:
- evangelizing is going on and well in Fort Dauphin;
- the Bishop, Todd McGregor, has visited us in last March 28th: 22 baptized and 28 confirmations;
- yesterday, May 30th, all Christians were in Ampasy Nahampoana, 7 km from Fort Dauphin to celebrate the first Mass. It is the 2nd parish [what Deacon Donné means is that our Companion Parish has already founded a daughter parish].
- associations in the Church are now: Sunday School, Mother Union, Young Union, and Men Union
Sunday school wish to tally there with yours but as you know language is a very big problem! [we should get responses to our children's emails soon.]
The building of the New Church started this month. According to the enterprise "Alpha Construction" executing the work, it should be finished in end of next September if God agrees. Next time I'll send photos.
Now, problem of Clergy home and transportation means remain.
Finally, many thanks again of your support, I pray God to support you and all St Gregory Christians, too. Please tell them our thanks.
In attached photos of Christians in May 24th and in 30th:
The first two pictures were taken on May 24 in Fort Dauphin.

The next three photographs were taken in the school room where the church has been meeting since its founding. They are celebrating the Eucharist in preparation for travelling to their new mission church in Ampasy Nahampoana. Deacon Donné, with his red stole, is presiding in the first picture. In the third picture you can see Evangelist Tomboasy in the blue stole with the white crosses. See if you can find them in the third set of pictures!

The next three pictures are in Ampasy Nahampoana; in the third they are climbing onto the truck for the ride back to Ft. Dauphin.

Good by God bless you! Rev TSIMAVO Andriamahenina Dieu Donné

DORTHEA'S MARIAN HOUSE UPDATES AS OF 05/28/10
-Received refund of $3,290 from SET Environmental; NOTE: Refund was not due to improper work; nor will their work require repeating. SET performance met industry protocols as affirmed by mold hygienists and by proposal costs from other remediation contractors. Extent of original remediation was limited to attic storage. In addition moisture pulled from crawl space was subsequently identified by hygienists adding to continued mold growth and spread, requiring further remediation.
-Concluded meetings with remediation contractors; proposals pending from 4th contractor;
-Provided architect, with floor plan option selected from work group's review. Architect, Lindsey & Associates, Glenview, selected in March through vestry approval;
-Met with Glenn Woo to develop appropriate actions for crawl space drainage and ventilation including insulation of HVAC ducts. Glenn has accepted assignment to lead actions and will coordinate work with any HVAC contractors.
WEDDING!

RESEARCH REQUEST
Author Cooper C. Graham is writing an article "on the World War I cinematographer and war correspondent Edwin F. Weigle [who] married Florence Marshall Johnson. I understand that Lorraine M. Kelley was the daughter of Florence by her first marriage. It may also be possible that Florence was related to John Marshall, one of the co-founders of the Middleby-Marshall Oven Company, with which both Mr. Weigle and Mr. Kelley were active. . . . Lorraine then married Hubert N. Kelley." (Hubert and Lorraine were among St. Gregory's Founders, and they have windows in the choir loft.)
Dr. Cooper is "looking for any information that I can obtain on the family, especially after Mr. Weigle left the Chicago Tribune and settled in Deerfield. Edwin F. Weigle was a noted war correspondent and cinematographer for the Chicago Tribune, who made a number of important documentary films during World War I and immediately thereafter. These include: On Belgian Battlefields (1914); The German Side of the War series one and two (1915-1916); and Ireland in Revolt (1920), with a script written by his wife Florence. He was also in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in 1917-18. Some of his films have recently been found, and any information for the article that should appear in Film History would be greatly appreciated."
If you have any information, Bill will pass it on to or put you in touch with Dr. Cooper.

Dearly Beloved,
SPECIAL PARISH MEETING
Last Sunday we heard reports from Dorthea White and David Schaper on the status and scope of the repairs, remediation, and refurbishment of Marian House, and on its financing. Owing to unacceptable levels of mold, and the failure of intermediate measures to solve the problem, the Buildings and Grounds Management Team and the Vestry recognized the need for a comprehensive solution. To that end, Dorthea, who is the Marian House residence liaison as well as Treasurer, has formed a task force.
In the meantime, Erica's family has moved to temporary housing so that the necessary work can be accomplished without further disruption of her family's living, and exposure to the mold's effects.
Because the scope of the work is so extensive, we cannot fund it through the Operating Budget. The line of credit we obtained from the Northern Trust to fund the replacement of our boiler (which we are already repaying) was the logical and most economical means to fund the Marian House work. Just as the Vestry went to the Parish to approve the initial line of credit, we returned to you for its extension.
The following motion was made, seconded, and approved after discussion: "to increase the line of credit by $75,000 to pay for the mold remediation and remodeling of Marian House and relocation expenses of Erica Jeglum and family. In conjunction with this increased borrowing, St. Gregory's will begin a fundraising campaign to raise $75,000 over 5 years to repay the borrowings."
In the weeks to come, Dorthea, or the Wardens and I, will provide short reports on our progress through the Newsletter.
NEW DIRECTOR FOR THE BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS MANAGEMENT TEAM
Last night I ended my transitional direction of the BGMT following Dori Carlson's resignation. I am pleased to announce that David Schaper is the new Director.
We also welcomed a new member to the BGMT, Dan Moceri, and he immediately made important contributions to our deliberations. I especially want to thank Pam Dorband and Dan Aberson. Both of them were new to the BGMT when I began. Pam created our Projects Status Reports and Calendar, and Dan's expertise ranging from electricity to plumbing has been invaluable.
CONGRATULATIONS CORNER
Deerfield High School's Honors Night featured two of our graduating seniors.
Nick Raimondi was awarded the Dan Legare Memorial Music Scholarship for a student planning to enter the field of Music Education.
Stuart Babcock received the Illinois Council of Teachers of Math Student Achievement Award and the Friends of the Arts Award for Excellence and Creativity (Jazz Band category); and was recognized as a National Merit USG Corporation Scholarship winner and 2010 National Merit Semifinalist and Finalist.
SOLES4SOULS PROJECT UPDATE
Cissy Singleton reports that Jeff has already filled 6 boxes, and there are many shoes yet to pack. If you would like to make a donation to cover the mailing costs so we can start shipping to the Iowa drop locations, please send it to Ida in the Parish Office.
DEERFIELD CELEBRATES MEMORIAL DAY
Our own Ed Collins is the American Legion's Deerfield Post 738 Publicity Officer. Deerfield's war veterans will honor their fallen comrades on Memorial Day, May 31, at the Veterans Memorial in the southwest corner of Jewett Park. Parishioners are invited to the program which will begin at 10 a.m. and include the Deerfield Park District's annual citizenship award to a Deerfield High School student.
Following the Jewett Park ceremonies, the Legionnaires will march to the Deerfield Cemetery on South Waukegan Road for the traditional rifle salute and reading of the names of the war dead who have been buried there since the Civil War.
Faithfully yours,

Sheridan and currently serving in Afghanistan said, "Your care package(s) have been an amazing gift for all of us here…I can't begin to tell you how blessed I am to have a team like you folks at home! Thanks again..." Major Aitchison is a nurse at North Shore University Health System at both Highland Park and Evanston hospitals and is a friend of Lin Reichenbach. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to all who have participated and supported this very visible Ministry at St. Gregory's Church. Cissy and Nuala
CHRISTMAS BASKET PROGRAM
I know most of us have just started thinking about summer with the arrival of warmer weather. However, those of us at the Cathedral Shelter are already working on the Christmas Basket program for 2010. We have had several meetings and are planning for registration of families and seniors to begin on the first Saturday of June.
I am hoping there are several of you who would be interested in helping to work with me on the Christmas Basket program here at St. Gregory's. I will certainly help you along the way. If you think this is something you would like to do, or if you just have questions about what would be involved, please give me a call at (847) 945-5068. Thank you. Marilyn Knilans
